Challenge Summary

Welcome to the "VA Memorial App Responsive Wireframe Design Challenge". In this challenge we are looking to wireframe out one section of a larger application for the VA (National Cemetery Administration, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs). The VA Memorial app will serve as a means for families and the public to leave stories, photos, and comments on a veterans profile. We are looking for your ideas and the best user experience. Background Overview
The U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (The VA), are developing an application that will allow registered family members and the general public to find deceased veterans that buried at national cemeteries around the UNited States, and leave stories, photos, comments, memories, etc. to that person's profile. Approved family members or Next of Kins (NOKs) will be allowed to edit and update the person's profile information, included profile image, live events, and additional details about the person. The NOK will act as the "moderator" for the profile.

Challenge Goals
-  Wireframe an engaging and well thought out experience
-  The profiles should serve as a memorials that honors the person

User Personas
1. Next of Kin (option to show this in the user's profile with an icon or some other method)
- Can manage/ edit a veteran profile/ record
- Can provide/ upload photos and edit bio
- Can select a posted photo and mark that as a "profile" image

2. Logged in user (has a username and account)
- Just need to confirm email address
- Can post anonymously, as an option
- Ability to become a Next of Kin. Need to send a request to the admin

3. Admin/ Historian
- Should have visibility into anonymous posts
- Admin privileges across the entire application

Target Devices
- We are targeting desktop only for this challenge, but there will be a mobile version, so think in responsive UX flows and features.
- Desktop: 1366px width (height adjusting accordingly)

Screen & Functionality Requirements
1. Home

- We are open and looking for ideas of what would be included on this initial page

2. Login/ Signup user Flows
- Signup requires email and password
- Email will need to be verified
- Username: email, and password to login

3. Search
- Simple search field with the option to refine and filter further
- Refinement/ filtering:
- Branch of service
- Division, squadron, ship (This may not always be available or helpful as an individual person could be apart of several units and the system might have incomplete information.)
- Location served (free text)
- Date of birth
- Date of death
- Burial location

4. Veteran Details/ Profile
- Basic bio information will be automatically populated from NGL (National Gravesite Locator)
- Information includes: Name (First, Middle, Last), Branch of Service, Rank, Campaign (war, conflict, etc., if available), Date of Birth, Date of Death, Buried at Location
- Example information can be seen here: https://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/index.html (search a last name)
- Profile picture. NOK can upload or "mark" a previously uploaded photo as the official profile picture
- Posts. Users can make posts and upload photos.
- Open to other ideas, like timelines, cross linking between profiles, etc.

5. User Profile
- Profile area for the a registered user
- Email preferences
- General profile information/ update information
- Notification settings
- NOK request

6. Notifications
- NOK approval/ Deny
- Memory posted selected as "NOK view only"
- Open to other notification types that make sense for the application/ user

Post Types
- Any registered user can make a post on any profile. There should be an option for anyone to "mark" a post as inappropriate, similar to Facebook.

1. Memories or Notes
- Stories or short comments
- Potential grief or painful experiences/ stories could be shared (how to handle that)
- Option to only allow a NOK to view? Sort of like a Direct Message
- Open to other ideas

2. Events
- Could this map to a timeline or some visual representation of time that relates to the person's life?
- Ex. Wedding Date, birth, death, date enlisted

3. Photos

Target Audience
- General public
- Families and friends of deceased veterans
- Academic Community (students, teachers, educators, historians, etc.)

Sketch / HTML
- You are also allowed to design your screens in sketch and create interaction in marvelapp (you can request a marvelapp link in the forums).
NOTE: If you are designing in sketch it is mandatory that you create the flow using marvelapp / invision as we are expecting to see a clickable wireframes in this challenge. (Important, otherwise you will fail screening)
- You are also allowed to submit pure HTML wireframes

Judging Criteria
- Overall user experience
- Layout and feature organization of the pages
- How the user navigates and moves through the application
- Understanding of the application and it's intent/ purpose

Preview Image

Please create your preview image as one (1) 1024x1024px JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode at 72dpi and place a screenshot of your submission within it.

Submission File
Wireframes should be built in HTML or Axure or sketch (Black and white, with interaction in marvelapp / invision)

Source Files
All original source files of the submitted ideas. If you would like to submit notes please include notes.txt file.

Final Fixes
As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to modify content or user click path

How To Submit

  • Upload your submission in three parts (Learn more here). Your design should be finalized and should contain only a single design concept (do not include multiple designs in a single submission).
  • If your submission wins, your source files must be correct and “Final Fixes” (if applicable) must be completed before payment can be released.
  • You may submit as many times as you'd like during the submission phase, but only the number of files listed above in the Submission Limit that you rank the highest will be considered. You can change the order of your submissions at any time during the submission phase. If you make revisions to your design, please delete submissions you are replacing.

Winner Selection

Submissions are viewable to the client as they are entered into the challenge. Winners are selected by the client and are chosen solely at the client's discretion.

Your Design Files:

  1. Look for instructions in this challenge regarding what files to provide.
  2. Place your submission files into a "Submission.zip" file.
  3. Place all of your source files into a "Source.zip" file.
  4. Declare your fonts, stock photos, and icons in a "Declaration.txt" file.
  5. Create a JPG preview file.
  6. Place the 4 files you just created into a single zip file. This will be what you upload.
