Challenge Summary

Got creative talent? Disney Interactive Media Group, the online division of the Walt Disney Company, and TopCoder Studio invite you to show off your unique, edgy artistic style by creating original designs, sketches, illustrations, traditional paintings or digital renderings of classic Disney Characters from "THE LION KING."

By entering the competition, you have the opportunity to explore the Disney brand and reinterpret one of the characters from The Lion King in a fresh, innovative, and informal way that utilizes your distinctive artistic style. Choose from any of the following characters: Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Scar, Rafiki, Zazu, Pumbaa, Timon or the Banzai, Shenzi, and Ed Trio.

Undergraduate students as well as recent graduates, aspiring painters, illustrators, cartoonists, fashion/game/graphic designers, mixed media/graffiti artists, and sculptors who otherwise meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to participate. Entries must be original and can be created in any medium.

Contestants will be competing for $1500 IN CASH PRIZES and a chance at A PRESTIGIOUS DESIGN INTERNSHIP or PROFESSIONAL CO-OP POSITION DURING 2010. So if your one-of-a-kind creative style sets you apart, break out the supplies and channel your artistic passion into a top-spot contender for Disney Interactive Media Group's "Your Take!" competition.

In addition to the prizes listed above, Disney Interactive Media Group may award Honorable Mention prizes worth $100 at their discretion.

BONUS! Submit Early:
Disney will pick their favorite design and will provide a design review and a Disney Prize Pack to one member who submits before October 12, 2009 at 9:00 am (EST). Please note that being awarded the interim review prize has no impact on winning the competition. The prize pack includes a Disney Lion King plush toy, two tickets to the Walt Disney Park and a T-shirt. Submit early for this great opportunity!

Each submission must consist of the following items (detailed below):

  1. Core Submission,
  2. an executed SSA, and
  3. Participant Information.
Members must also submit a signed Assignment Document in order to submit to the competition.

Core Submission

ART
Create a unique portrayal of any of the following Characters from "The Lion King" franchise: Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Scar, Rafiki, Zazu, Pumbaa, Timon or the Banzai, Shenzi, and Ed Trio. Feature one character per entry (the trio counts as one), which may be computer-generated or created using any of the following mediums: clay, collage, fabric, markers, mosaic, acrylic/oil paint, pencils, pen & ink, pencil, spray paint, watercolors, mixed media, etc. Choice of medium will not affect judging. Competitors are permitted up to submit up to three (3) submissions for this competition ("Submission Limit").

FORMAT

  • Digital entries must be submitted in a JPEG or TIFF file, no larger than 2MB, with dimensions of 1280 pixels wide by 1024 pixels high per image.
  • Non-digital entries (e.g., two- or three-dimensional works) must be photographed or scanned with shots showing various angles (back, front, sides, top, bottom, etc.) and must be submitted in a JPEG or TIFF file, no larger than 2 MB, with dimensions of 1280 pixels wide by 1024 pixels high per image.

Participant Information

Competitors must submit a document in MS Word format that includes the following information: name, mailing address, phone number, email, school, date of graduation, major, resume/bio (including all credits, shows, press coverage, etc...), original size of artwork, medium, title, and a paragraph of 500 words or less explaining why they should be selected for a 2010 Disney Interactive Media Group internship.

Judging Criteria

- Understanding of world of "The Lion King" - does the submission accurately convey the feel and characteristics of the franchise? - Understanding the role of the character in the world of "The Lion King" - does the submission accurately portray the Character's role? - Uniqueness/Innovative - how unique and/or innovative is the submission? - Aesthetically pleasing - is the submission pleasing to view (e.g., use of colors, designs, style, etc...)? - Age appropriate - Is the submission appropriate to audiences of "The Lion King" as well as customers and guests of Disney Interactive Media Group and its affiliates?

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.

Stock Photography

Stock photography is not allowed in this challenge. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you. See this page for more details.

How To Submit

  • Upload your submission in three parts (Learn more here). Your design should be finalized and should contain only a single design concept (do not include multiple designs in a single submission).
  • If your submission wins, your source files must be correct and final fixes (if applicable) must be completed before payment can be released.
  • You may submit as many times as you'd like during the submission phase, but only the number of files listed above in the Submission Limit that you rank the highest will be considered. You can change the order of your submissions at any time during the submission phase. If you make revisions to your design, please delete submissions you are replacing.

Winner Selection

Submissions are viewable to the client as they are entered into the challenge. Winners are selected by the client and are chosen solely at the client's discretion.

Your Design Files:

  1. Look for instructions in this challenge regarding what files to provide.
  2. Place your submission files into a "Submission.zip" file.
  3. Place all of your source files into a "Source.zip" file.
  4. Declare your fonts, stock photos, and icons in a "Declaration.txt" file.
  5. Create a JPG preview file.
  6. Place the 4 files you just created into a single zip file. This will be what you upload.

All fonts, stock photos, and icons within your design must be declared when you submit. DO NOT include any 3rd party files in your submission or source files. Read about the policy.
