February 12, 2021 Making 2021 the year of Reskilling

Reskilling was a major topic in 2019, and it’s re-emerging as we get back to work in 2021. Last year was characterized by pure reaction—getting people home, set up, and used to remote work. Now we’re entering the next phase, and reskilling is more important than ever. Every enterprise faced unique disruption, but innovation hasn’t stopped. Many workers are home and hungry to improve their skills, and reskilling will play a major role in economic recovery. We’re shining a spotlight on the people and organizations leading the reskilling revolution.

A SKILLS-BASED APPROACH TO EDUCATION

Marni Baker Stein joined the Uprisor podcast to talk about how a shift to skills-based assessments and hiring can positively impact the talent marketplace. Marni is Provost and Chief Academic Officer for Western Governor’s University, and helped launch the Open Skills Network (OSN), focused on standardizing competency-based education. Topcoder is a partner in OSN, and a huge proponent of the shift to skills-based education and hiring. Beyond the fluff, OSN is unique in that it’s anchored in AI and has sophisticated technology behind it.

WORK REIMAGINED – XPRIZE RESKILLING COMPETITION

Renowned for solving the world’s most grand challenges through incentivized competition, XPRIZE essentially started the modern day space race, with the Ansari XPRIZE for private spaceflight. Now they’ve turned their attention to reskilling. XPRIZE Rapid Reskilling is a $5 million dollar, 30-month competition to quickly reskill under-resourced workers for the digital revolution. This is a really cool effort, and more proof that the reskilling movement is huge and important.

More future of work predictions
