July 7, 2020 Staying Resilient When Talent Policies Change

Change is constant, and resilience means not just weathering the storm but actually thriving through periods of uncertainty and disruption. Flexibility is key. TechCrunch recently posted about President Trump’s new executive order that temporarily halts work visas like the H-1B visa program for highly skilled workers.

Policies change over time, and this one is catching the ire of top tech companies for cutting off a critical source of technical talent. Some executives sounded off about the order, saying that it will slow innovation and hinder the economy’s ability to recover from the pandemic:

“This will slow innovation and undermine the work the technology industry is doing to help our country recover from unprecedented events.”

Linda Moore, President and chief executive of TechNet

“Whether his administration realizes it or not, they are creating a significant handicap for US innovation.”

Stonly Baptiste, co-founder of technology investment fund Urban.us

A flexible workforce is a resilient workforce

We are living in an era of access over ownership (Spotify, Netflix, Uber/Lyft etc.), and this same philosophy works for enterprises and talent strategy, too. The tech industry was already complaining about tech talent shortages, and grappling with the impact of COVID-19. Virtual talent offers a smart alternative. On-demand talent can help enterprises stay resilient when policies change.

As Topcoder’s Chief Technologist Dave Messinger discussed in his keynote speech at TCO19, on-demand talent has tremendous potential to accelerate innovation in times of stability and uncertainty. If you plan ahead and adopt an all-in talent strategy that includes FTEs, contractors, and crowd you will experience far less – potentially zero – talent shortages.

If you’re experiencing a talent shortage or want to ensure your enterprise avoids a shortage despite any policy shifts or unforeseen global events you should examine Talent as a Service (TaaS) from Topcoder. In short, it’s top technology talent on your projects, on demand. And with TaaS, you and your team can stay focused on execution.
