Crowdsourcing Responsive Concepts to Spark Internal Innovation
The Challenge
John Hancock aimed to build an internal tool that empowered employees and contractors to share innovative ideas that could positively impact the organization.
They envisioned a simple, responsive web/mobile app where users could submit suggestions, comment on others' ideas, and engage in a collaborative innovation environment. The app needed to be intuitive, gamified, and aligned with the companyʼs brand, while fostering company-wide participation and recognition.
The Solution
Topcoder launched a fast-paced, 48-hour design challenge to crowdsource visual concepts for the new "Innovation HUB." Designers were asked to deliver a responsive interface that worked seamlessly across web and mobile. Key features included idea submission, discussion threads, search and filtering, profile views, a gamified leaderboard, and visual dashboards.
The global community responded with bold and thoughtful approaches to designing an engaging space for company-wide collaboration.

The Impact
The challenge generated 35 design submissions from 44 participants across the Topcoder community. Eight winning designs were selected and later showcased at a live internal design workshop. The concepts offered a range of interactive and gamified user flows that would help John Hancock drive engagement, boost idea visibility, and surface valuable suggestions from their workforce.
The success of this initiative demonstrated how a quick crowdsourcing sprint could support enterprise innovation.
