The Challenge
Cisco aimed to modernize its Cisco On Demand platform—a community-driven, collaborative support environment—by bringing it to mobile. The goal was to provide a seamless, highly usable mobile experience for network engineers and IT professionals who need to solve technical issues, contribute to discussions, and access knowledge on the go.
Cisco partnered with Topcoder to design a mobile support app that delivers personalized insights, peer-to-peer interaction, and proactive problem-solving tools—all built around real user needs and field scenarios.
The Solution
Topcoder launched a series of challenges to deliver an end-to-end solution, including:
A mobile UX design challenge to create intuitive interfaces based on user stories and Cisco’s design direction.
A clickable HTML prototype challenge, transforming static designs into interactive user flows using Angular, Bootstrap, and HTML/CSS.
A mobile app coding challenge, which connected key UI components to Cisco’s APIs to demonstrate real functionality for dashboard views, discussions, search, and question submission.
Designs and prototypes were built around real-life user scenarios, such as a network engineer troubleshooting firmware configurations in the field. Key interactions included posting questions, reviewing threaded responses, following discussions, and blogging from a mobile interface.

The Result
The Impact
The Topcoder community delivered fully functional prototypes, demonstrating how a modern support experience could be translated to mobile while preserving Cisco’s rich collaboration capabilities. The project:
Enabled Cisco to validate mobile-first UI/UX concepts with real code
Reduced time-to-market by leveraging crowdsourced design and development
Provided flexible, reusable components for future expansion of the mobile platform
This effort helped lay the groundwork for Cisco’s evolution toward more responsive, mobile-enabled technical support experiences.
