Challenge Summary

Welcome to Scout - Data Visualization First to Finish Design Challenge!
Our client the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office (BTO) is developing a modeling system called “Scout” that will help measure the energy conservation potential of new technologies. BTO calls these new technologies “energy conservation measures” (abbreviated as ECMs).

Previously we ran 2 design challenges to develop visualizations of data provided by “Scout” that can make it easier for decision-makers to answer some important questions about energy conservation opportunities.
Challenge Description
The purpose of this challenge is to integrate the outcomes of two previous visualization challenges. In general, the results from the second challenge will serve as the base material, and certain details from the first challenge results should be integrated into them. Instructions for what to keep/discard from each of the existing challenge results follow.

Design Requirements
Instructions for use of second challenge results (found here):
Please discard the following:
- Images 02 and 03 (Energy Saving V2) and 04 (Carbon Dioxide V1).
Please make the following modifications:
- In image ‘01 Energy Saving V1.png,’ please change ‘Highlight Energy Savings’ to ‘Display Energy Savings’ to be consistent with the check boxes in images 04-06.
- In image 01, please disallow or remove any filtering options aside from ‘Group By’ and ‘Period Years’; the remaining filters are not needed for this figure.
- In images 05-06, please modify the check box labels to say ‘CO2 Emissions’ instead of ‘Energy Use,’ since these plots focus on CO2.
- In image ‘07 Costs.png,’ please replace the pie chart and label shown with either a radar graph or Sankey-type plot (e.g., replace with one of the plot types shown for Energy or CO2, to show how these plots can also work for Cost. We would like to discard the pie chart type).
- In images ‘08 Financial Metrics.png’ and ‘09 Financial Metrics Tootips.png,’ please revise the approach for showing uncertainty to be clearer. Specifically, the shade of the uncertainty regions should be lighter, and the uncertainty regions need not be so irregularly shaped (e.g., they could just be simple ellipses around each circular data point). Note that uncertainty bounds would extend in both the x and y directions, but may be asymmetric around each point.
- In image ‘01 Energy Saving V1.png’ please add back in the energy savings tooltip from the original submission image ‘03 Energy Saving Tooltip.png’ (found here, though note the label should say ‘Lighting’ not ‘Lightning’). Please also list total baseline energy use numbers at the outermost points of the baseline energy use plot region, in addition to the savings numbers already shown in quads next to the yellow line segments.
- Please add back in the general explanatory notes image ‘10 Notes 1.png’ from the original submission (found here).

Instructions for use of first challenge results (found here):
Please incorporate the following elements into the second challenge results:
- The use of notes to briefly explain key features of each figure. Here, the content of the text isn’t as important as its look/feel and positioning relative to each plot.

Design Notes
- Design concepts produced in this challenge will be implemented using web standard approaches (e.g., d3.js) and can incorporate interactive features.
- No istockphoto allowed in this contest. Use your own designs and illustrations.
- Please make sure you list all fonts you’ve used in your design to avoid failing screening.

Target Audience
- Technology and program managers within BTO (Building Technologies Office).
- DOE (Department of Energy) offices.
- Federal agencies.
- External BTO partners (e.g., universities, national labs, industry organizations).

Judging Criteria
- Overall completeness of the design updates required
- How well you follow and retain the current designs, UI elements, and aesthetics

Submission & Source Files
Submission Notes
Please make sure to include a “Notes.jpg”. Please ensure that it provides a brief explanation regarding your submission, the reasoning/thoughts behind the design and any other detail you may want to provide.
Preview Image
Please create your preview image as one (1) 1024x1024px JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode at 72dpi and place a screenshot of your submission within it.

Submission File
Submit JPG/PNG for your submission file.

Source Files
All original source files of the submitted design. Files should be created in Adobe Photoshop and saved as layered PSD file, or Adobe Illustrator as a layered AI file.

Final Fixes
As part of the final fixes phase you may be asked to modify your graphics (sizes or colors) or modify overall colors. As part of final fixes you may be asked to fix or update your screens to meet any missed Requirements, Forum requirements or Checkpoint requirements.

Please read the challenge specification carefully and watch the forums for any questions or feedback concerning this challenge. It is important that you monitor any updates provided by the client or Studio Admins in the forums. Please post any questions you might have for the client in the forums.

Stock Photography

Stock photography is not allowed in this challenge. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you. See this page for more details.

How To Submit

  • New to Studio? ‌Learn how to compete here
  • Upload your submission in three parts (Learn more here). Your design should be finalized and should contain only a single design concept (do not include multiple designs in a single submission).
  • If your submission wins, your source files must be correct and “Final Fixes” (if applicable) must be completed before payment can be released.
  • You may submit as many times as you'd like during the submission phase, but only the number of files listed above in the Submission Limit that you rank the highest will be considered. You can change the order of your submissions at any time during the submission phase. If you make revisions to your design, please delete submissions you are replacing.

Winner Selection

Submissions are viewable to the client as they are entered into the challenge. Winners are selected by the client and are chosen solely at the client's discretion.
