TCO15 News and Information

By mcards13 In Community Stories

Posted March 25th, 2015

This year, I celebrate ten years of being part of the Topcoder community; ten years of TCOs and countless other tournaments. As I’ve said many times over the years, I’ve come to love the community at Topcoder like family. I know I have friends all over the world who would open their homes to me and I understand how much this community means to many of you.

The Topcoder community is huge! We are over 760,000 members worldwide and growing! When I first started, we had just hit 50,000 members, had only dished out just under a million dollars in winnings, and there was no such thing as Studio. The Topcoder Open, upon creation, was built for the small community that it once was. Over the years, the event has grown in many ways to try to accommodate the growing community that we are (take a stroll down memory lane; (The Evolution of the Topcoder Open and 14 Years of the TCO in a Nutshell). However, as it stands, we don’t touch nearly as many members as we’d like to. It’s time to reimagine TCO for the future of the community and we want to start now.

We have some big TCO15 news; some changes and some exciting additions. I’m honored to be the face of the Topcoder Open and share this news with you.

As you know, TCO15 was already launched in August of last year so we would like to honor what we started as much as possible. Unfortunately, in order to move forward we also need to scale back and make some changes now so we can help mold future events and our competition platform to be more aligned with our goals.

Below, I’ve outlined all the changes you will see that encompass TCO15 with regards to each track of competition and the event overall. Our goal is to be completely transparent with you all and be extremely sensitive and responsive to the questions and concerns that may arise.

Topcoder admins [jwlms], [adroc], [t-mac], [mnorouzi], and myself [jmpld40] will be available in this forum to respond so please try to keep all inquiries in this one area so we can respond as quickly as possible.

In the coming weeks, you’ll hear more information about the investments we’re making for you. We will be showing you how we are prioritizing our spend on Topcoder to benefit more of you, including:

  • Building a World Class Platform
  • Focusing on generating customer demand for our community
  • Engaging and involving more members

We do plan to hold TCO for many years to come and I look forward to being there!
