As software developers it isn’t too often that we have a chance to have a positive impact on the world around us in a meaningful way. Well, here is your chance. Topcoder is seeking to develop an algorithm (and ultimately an application) which can accurately measure the height of children in the developing world.
These measurements will be used to study the impact of interventions aimed at reducing child stunting and to help conduct studies aimed at identifying the underlying causes of this condition. Stunting not only affects physical development but has a negative impact on the cognitive potential of the affected children. The scope of this issue is breathtaking. In 2010, the World Health Organization estimated that 171 million children around the world were stunted. One step in understanding this issue is overcoming a significant technical challenge — the ability to take accurate measurements using a readily available mobile device. In the Develop Algorithm to Measure Height and Length using an Android Device challenge, we’re looking to develop an algorithm to solve this problem. Please join us!
