There are several types of notifications that users get when they are added to projects and contests.  The 3 main types of notifications are: 1.  Contest Forum Notifications - Users get notified via email when a post is made in a forum on a contest they are watching. 2.  Contest Timeline Notifications - Users get notified via email when the phases of a contest advance and when an action needs to be taken on a contest. 3.  Project Forum Notifications - Users get notified via email when anyone posts in the project forum.  Changing this setting impacts all projects created in the future.  It will not turn on/off your setting on existing project forums.  To do so, visit the project and check/uncheck the box above the project forum.   By default, contest notifications are turned off for users that are granted permission to a project via the Cockpit permissions tab.  That means that when a contest is created in a project that a user has permission on the user will not get notifications.  If the user wants notifications they can control them via Notification Settings in Cockpit.

There are a few exceptions to the default rule: 1.  Users with the role of Manager, Copilot or Client Manager will get notifications regardless of their global setting in Cockpit.  This is done since these 3 roles are considered critical to the success of the contest.  If you don't want to get notifications, switch your role to Observer and then your global setting will apply.
