Some contests have milestones. The most common contests with milestones are Studio, Conceptualization and Architecture. A milestone is an interim submission deadline where competitors can submit a work in progress for a preliminary review and feedback. The intention is to use it as an "iteration" within the contest cycle for contests that are more subjective in nature.

Each contest must have a document, which defines what the goal of the competition is and what the expected solution should provide. This document is usually called a specification. A “spec review” is the process that makes sure that any such specification is well written, well priced in terms of the contest prize, and relevant to the problem at hand (i.e. does not to try to solve too much)
