The New Girl Power: STEM Education

Girl Power! No, we aren’t referencing the Brit-Pop five-some “Spice Girls” of mid-90′s fame (can you believe this is the 2nd time the Spice Girls were mentioned in a TopCoder post – see here), but instead we are talking about a new, 2013 version of Girl Power, and this one is based in STEM Education. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math = STEM. Have you heard of it? The lack of STEM graduates is one of the problems hurting the USA, because let’s face it; it’s not cool to be a geek. But who says you have to be a geek to be good at STEM subjects and who says being good at STEM subjects makes you a geek? There is a misconception about being good in the subjects that comprise STEM and it needs to change because I can guarantee you people who went to school with folks like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and even Marissa Meyer may have called these intelligent folks “geeks”. But who has the last laugh? Most importantly we need to find a way to showcase to young girls that it’s okay to be good in STEM! Middle school and high school only last a few years of your life, but a good education, based on learning exceptional STEM related skills lasts a lifetime. We need to show them that STEM is the new girl power. Here at TopCoder we are offering $10,000 in prizes to designers all over our country to help us “show” these girls and encourage them to get interested in STEM. Please enjoy and share the video below:
The contest has been running for about two months but submissions will be accepted through the end of August. Here is a sneak peak of one of the awesome designs we’ve already got. We can’t share the whole thing yet, sorry!
We are very excited to see the posters but even more excited to share them. If you or someone you know may be interested in receiving a poster at the end of this contest, please let us know. But for now, please share this contest with designers you know. One at a time, we will make a difference and prove that it’s cool to be a geek! Girl Power!!!
