Open Innovation & Crowdsourcing: 8 Questions on Intellectual Property You Need Answered
Now heading into our 11th year continuously growing the TopCoder Community and hosting competitions through our Open Innovation platform, we have learned quite a bit with regards to how enterprise level clients approach the issue of intellectual property in Open Innovation and more importantly, the questions they routinely seek answers to on this topic.
Treating intellectual property very seriously is a smart move, always. Asking in depth questions of your potential innovation platform partner allows you to gauge the maturity of their platform and their ability to handle complex matters. Answers to questions about IP & security will also illuminate for you the type and breadth of work an Open Innovation platform can effectively handle. Why is this very important?
Leaders setting a strategic vision to embark and embrace a path of Open Innovation are typically not looking for a one-off solution, but rather a transformative way to increase productivity and bolster innovation. If a platform is ill-equipped to handle most work, it obviously greatly limits the value that can be delivered back to your company. On the other hand, if an Open Innovation platform is mature, can handle a very broad range of complex work – while satisfying IP concerns – then you perhaps have the right vessel to accelerate your innovation and greatly boost productivity.
It all starts with information and becoming educated. With that in mind, we recently hosted a well attended webinar entitled – Security!!! Protecting Intellectual Property in Open Innovation & Crowdsourcing. Below is a legend highlighting the various aspects of the webinar including the 8 Questions on Intellectual Property in Open Innovation that You Must Answer. Towards the bottom of the post, enjoy the webinar recording and finally, be sure to download the accompanying paper that highlights the “8 Questions” and provides you a base of knowledge from which you can build upon.
Yes, Open Innovation is much more widely accepted and practiced today than it was even three years ago, but it’s not because companies stopped caring about intellectual property. It’s more attributed to the fact that solutions such as the TopCoder Platform can satisfy their IP concerns, allowing the company to put business first, knowing the legal side of the equation is handled properly.
