Legacy System Modernization: Achieving the Complex via Open Innovation & Crowdsourcing
At this point, I believe most people are well versed on the notion of utilizing Crowdsourcing for design needs. Need a logo, or icon set; host a competition, post a purposeful prize on the right platform hooked to the right community of creatives and likely you will receive scores of different looks in a time-boxed time frame. In the grand spectrum of Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing, these types of subjective contests are likely the most straight-forward and most-utilized to date. Bear in mind, there is an art unto itself with regards to managing subjective crowdsourced contests and understanding how and when to provide guidance, feedback, design references, and more; but most who have read about or utilized Crowdsourcing understand that you can use “it” for creative design needs. We would suggest the very opposite is true for what are more complex projects. Most don’t yet realize that Big Data Biomedics challenges are procuring solutions that are magnitudes superior to what was an industry standard solution or that a series of Open Innovation challenges are helping to create a mHealth (mobile health) focused iPad application planned to be used in the micro-gravity environment aboard the International Space Station. And fewer still likely realize that Open Innovation & Crowdsourcing are being utilized to do the extraordinarily nuanced and complex builds such as legacy system modernization. Wherever you are on your road to mastery of Open Innovation, it is crucial to be exposed to what is possible, how it is being approached, and how you might utilize these tactics and approaches in your future. Below is a concise and edited video that details how TopCoder has utilized our process of atomized competitions to modernize legacy systems. Enjoy!
Why is Legacy Modernization So Tricky?
We of course cover this topic in the above video, but have a look at this simple slide to get your head around why modernization efforts are quite complex and nuanced projects.
We encourage you to watch the above video and focus in on the section that starts around the 5:45 marker. That is where we begin to talk approach. The “how”, is crucial here: Whether you personally are ever going to oversee a legacy modernization project or not, the purpose of the TopCoder Blog is to expose you to what is possible in Open Innovation, how it is approached, and how you can benefit from the mastery of Open Innovation management & execution. We hope this was a valuable piece for you and encourage you to keep pushing the boundaries with regards to what you are producing, contributing towards, creating, and accomplishing via Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing.
